I’m parked up, having a break in the van.
Young lady walks over.
Says, my car won’t start. I’m stuck at a gas station about five miles back.
I ask, what’s it doing.
She says, I filled up, went in to pay, came back out.
Dash says, key not present.
Push button start?
Yes.
That narrows it down fast.
First things first
I ask her, have you got the key fob with you.
She says no.
Her dad is back with the car.
She had to get to work, so her dad came, and they swapped cars. (got to love dads)
So I say, get your dad on the phone.
Talking him through it
I explain.
Most likely cause is a flat key fob battery.
Happens all the time.
Car can’t detect the key, so it won’t start.
But there’s a built-in workaround most drivers don’t know about.
The hidden backup that gets you going
It was a BMW 3 Series.
I tell him, look for the key reader point.
That’s the hotspot where the car reads the chip inside the key, even if the battery is dead.
On this model and year BMW it’s on the steering column, marked with a small key or WiFi style symbol.
But this is important.
That hotspot can be in different places depending on the car.
Common locations:
- Steering column area
- Start button itself, press the button with the fob
- Centre console
- Cup holder area
- Near the ignition switch on older push-start layouts
Look for a small key symbol or signal icon.
That’s your clue.
I tell him, hold the key fob right up against that point and press start.
What happened next
I hear a bit of movement.
Then he says, hang on.
Lights are on.
It’s starting.
Engine fires.
Job done.
What actually caused it
Simple.
Flat key fob battery.
The chip inside the key still works.
But without battery power, it can’t transmit its signal.
So the car thinks the key isn’t there.
Nothing wrong with the vehicle.
Just no communication.
What if the car won’t even unlock
This is worth knowing.
If the fob battery is completely dead, the car may not unlock either.
No buttons. No response.
There’s still a way in.
- Remove the small plastic cover on the door handle
- Inside is a hidden key slot
- Use the physical key stored inside the fob
Every modern fob has one.
You just don’t see it until you need it.
What I told them to do next
I said, get a new battery for the key fob.
Cheap. Quick. Done.
And don’t stop there.
- Replace the battery in your spare key as well
Because it’s usually the same age.
And will fail next.
About the warning most people miss
Most cars will warn you.
Key battery low message on the dash.
But it’s easy to miss.
Or ignore.
Then one day.
You’re stuck at a gas station with a car that thinks the key has vanished.
Roadside takeaway
If your car says key not present, don’t panic.
Try the hotspot trick first.
- Hold the fob directly against the reader point
- Press start
It’s designed for exactly this situation.
And if your fob stops unlocking the car.
Remember the hidden key.
Simple stuff.
But it’ll save you a callout.
