What to Say When You Call for Help

📞 Stay calm. Say the right things. Get rescued faster.

When you break down, the recovery operator isn’t judging you — they just need the right info quickly so they can send the right truck, with the right tools, to the right place. Here’s exactly what to say, even if you’re nervous or unsure.

1. Start With Your Location

This is the most important part.
Give one clear landmark:

☐ Road name or number
☐ Nearest junction or exit
☐ Direction of travel (towards / away from…)
☐ Any landmarks (petrol station, lay-by number, bridge)

Example:
“I’m on the M3 northbound, just after Junction 8, pulled in safely on the hard shoulder.”

2. Say What Happened (In Simple Terms)

You don’t need to diagnose it — just describe what you saw, heard, or smelled.

☐ “Car won’t start”
☐ “Dash light came on”
☐ “Flat tyre”
☐ “Engine overheated”
☐ “Strange noise / smoke / smell”
☐ “Lost power”

Example:
“The engine lost power and a red warning light came on. I pulled over straight away.”

3. Tell Them If You’re in a Safe Spot

Recovery needs to know if you’re secure or need urgent priority.

☐ In a safe parking area
☐ On the hard shoulder
☐ Stopped in a live lane
☐ At night / poor visibility
☐ Car loaded with passengers

Example:
“I’m on the hard shoulder with my hazards on. I’m staying in the car for safety.”

4. Give Your Car’s Details

They’ll ask, but have it ready:

☐ Make & model
☐ Colour
☐ Registration
☐ Petrol / diesel / hybrid / EV

Example:
“It’s a blue 2016 Toyota Yaris, petrol, registration 161-D-12345.”

5. Mention Any Tools or Spares You Have

It helps them decide what to send.

☐ Spare tyre
☐ Locking wheel nut
☐ Booster pack / jump leads
☐ Emergency kit
☐ No spare (common in newer cars)

Example:
“I have a spare tyre and the locking wheel nut.”

6. Keep a Simple Script Handy

Here’s the whole thing in one go:

“Hi, I’ve broken down. I’m on the [road], [direction], near [landmark].
My car is a [year, make, model, colour], reg [number].
The issue seems to be [simple description].
I’m currently [safe spot].
I have [spare tyre / wheel nut / etc.] with me.”

That’s all they need.

Pro Tips From the Roadside

🔹 Don’t guess the fault. Just describe what happened.
🔹 Don’t stand beside the car on busy roads. Safer to stay inside with hazards on unless told otherwise.
🔹 Turn off the engine unless you need heat.
🔹 Have your breakdown card or membership number ready.
🔹 If you feel unsafe, say so. Operators prioritise vulnerable drivers.
