Got called to a car at the customer’s house.
Complaint was simple.
Steering felt heavy. Car pulling to one side. Just didn’t feel right.
Good news was, they hadn’t driven far.
Felt it early, turned around, parked it up.
That decision probably saved them.
First impressions
Any time I hear pulling and heavy steering, I’m thinking front end.
Could be alignment. Could be something worn.
Could be something broken.
I ask the usual question.
Any work done recently.
Answer is yes. Been in the garage not long ago. Had work done and an inspection.
What I saw straight away
Quick look at the front wheels.
Alignment is way off.
Not slightly. Way off.
You don’t get that from normal wear.
That’s usually something shifted or failed.
At that point, I’m already thinking.
Something underneath has let go.
Underneath told the story
Got it up enough to take a proper look.
Didn’t take long.
Right-hand front lower control arm.
Gone.
And I mean gone.
Severely corroded. Metal eaten away.
It had basically separated and was hanging on by a weld.
One weld.
That’s all that was holding that wheel in position.
At speed, that’s a loss of control situation.
No question.
Why the steering felt so bad
The lower control arm locates the wheel.
It keeps everything where it should be.
Once it fails:
- Wheel alignment goes completely out
- Steering geometry collapses
- Car pulls hard to one side
- Steering can feel heavy or unpredictable
You’re not driving a car at that point.
You’re hanging on.
The scary part
This didn’t happen on a highway.
It happened close to home.
Low speed.
They felt it straight away and stopped.
That’s the difference between a bad day and a very bad day.
I’ve seen these fail at speed.
It really doesn’t end well.
The recent garage visit
Here’s the part that raised eyebrows.
The car had been in recently.
Work done. Inspection carried out.
But this level of corrosion does not happen overnight.
There’s no way this wasn’t there.
I showed the customer.
Took photos.
They were as surprised as I was.
Because this is the kind of thing that should be picked up.
What I advised
No patching this.
No driving it.
Proper repair needed.
- Replace the failed lower control arm
- Replace the opposite side as well
If one side is that bad, the other is not far behind.
I also had a look at the rear.
It was better, but corrosion was starting.
So I advised a full inspection.
All suspension components.
Front and rear.
Likely cause
This car had seen salt.
Either lived in it or came from it.
Underside corrosion was heavy.
Salt eats these components from the inside out.
By the time you see it, it’s already too late.
The outcome
No driving this one.
Too dangerous.
Loaded it up and towed it to the garage.
Customer shaken, but relieved it happened where it did.
Roadside takeaway
If your steering suddenly feels heavy or the car pulls hard, don’t ignore it.
Especially if it feels different, not just slightly off.
- Stop driving
- Get it checked
- Do not try to push through it
And one more thing.
If your car has lived in a salty environment, inspections matter.
Corrosion does give warnings.
