Shakes and vibrates at a Stoplight? What Your Car’s Telling You

Sitting at the lights and your car’s shaking like it’s had three espressos? That rough idle isn’t “character” — it’s a problem brewing under the hood.

Why It Happens

Engines are supposed to idle smooth. When they shake, it means one or more cylinders aren’t pulling their weight. It could be spark, fuel, or air causing a misfire. Typically, you’ll also get an engine light on. Sometimes it’s simple — a bad plug. Other times, it’s a deeper mechanical issue. Ignore it, and what’s a little shake now can become a full-blown stall or misfire later.

Most Common Causes

  • Worn spark plugs or coils – weak spark = rough idle.
  • Vacuum leak – cracked hose lets unmetered air in.
  • Dirty throttle body or idle valve – airflow disrupted.
  • Fuel injector issue – clogged or leaking.
  • Worn engine mounts – nothing wrong with combustion, but vibrations transfer straight to the cabin.

What You Can Check

  • Check for dashboard warning lights (like the Check Engine Light).
  • Pop the hood — listen for hissing that could be a vacuum leak.
  • Pull and inspect spark plugs if you’re handy. Worn or fouled? Replace them.
  • Look at engine movement in gear — excessive rocking points to mounts.

What a Mechanic Will Check

  • Scan for misfire or idle control codes.
  • Test ignition coils, plugs, and injectors.
  • Smoke test the intake for vacuum leaks.
  • Inspect engine and transmission mounts.

Ballpark Repair Costs

  • Spark plugs and coils: $200–$500.
  • Vacuum leak repair: $100–$300.
  • Fuel injector cleaning/replacement: $150–$400 each.
  • Engine mount replacement: $250–$600.

When to Call It Quits

If the shake is mild and no warning lights, you might limp it a bit. But a hard shake with misfire codes or flashing CEL? Park it. Driving misfiring cylinders will torch your catalytic converter in no time.
